I was watching that show on PBS
where the university professor researches
the ancestry of famous people,
then reveals to them lost relatives
who did something notable for their time,
like ran a portion of the underground railroad
or they were an original settler of Virginia.
Reawaking those vanished ancestors
made me think about how
impotent we won’t have children.
That’s when it occurred to me:
a hundred or more years from now,
nobody’s going to come looking for us
and rescue us
from obscurity.
